What to Expect During a Home Renovation

Whether you have just booked a home renovation or are thinking about embarking on one, what should you expect while working with a builder? To help you navigate the process we have compiled a list of 8 things to bear in mind during a home renovation.

1. You’ll Be the Talk of the Neighbourhood

Renovations draw a lot of attention. Talk with your neighbors about the degree of the renovation and also the projected timeline. Don’t forget to give them a heads up if there is something important happening, you do not want them to be amazed if an excavator shows up at 8 AM. Keeping everyone in the loop, and also the occasional coffee and donuts will ensure your BBQ party invitation for a long time to come!

2. Remember That It’s a Procedure

The restoration process is simply that, a procedure. There will be occasions when you can not contain your excitement just like on demo day or any time your fantasy tub is set up. However, there might also be dull days when progress seems slow. Ever watch wiring being set up?

3. Rethink Your Daily Routine

If you will be at home throughout the renovation, we can guarantee that your day-to-day routine is going to change. There will be sections of the home you might have restricted access to, people coming and going during the day, frequently quite early, and a lot of extra noise.

You’ll want to be flexible with your routines (do not forget to stretch first!). Think about what may need to change so that family and work lives can carry on as normally as possible. And provide a little additional thought to the littlest members of their family…kids and pets! They’ll be lots of new experiences for them to enjoy (we make certain to provide opportunities to see how we work!) However, you’ll want to be certain that for the most part they are stored safely out of the way.

4. You’ll Want to Take Photos

Before. During. After! You don’t need fancy equipment, all you need is a mobile phone with a camera on it. Don’t forget to take it out of your pocket to catch the entire procedure.

In progress, photos are great for keeping family members and friends up-to-date and to track how far you have come. While the before and after photos are crucial for comparisons. You would be surprised how quickly you forget the old pink tub or green shag carpet!

5. Find a Way to Stay Organized

While a fantastic contractor will take up to your plate as possible, you will still have a lot of choices to make. It can be the old-fashioned paper and pencil variety or you’ll be able to go digital (there’s likely an app for that).

It’ll be handy to have one spot for note-taking, to-do lists, also for writing down the questions that inevitably pop into your head as you’re cleaning your teeth.

6. Yes, There’ll Be Mess!

Your house is going to be a building site. No matter the preventative steps, such as dust obstacles and floor covers, dirt will escape into other parts of the property (it’s sneaky like that!).

With the extra foot traffic and vehicles your yard may also be subject to a bit of tear and wear, so be ready to demonstrate your home a little extra love throughout the reno, inside and outside. We always talk through how to minimize the effects of a reno together with customers, but are honest about what they will need to budget for yard clean up, etc., particularly for additions!

7. Everything You Should Expect From Your Contractor

An excellent builder (& team) will be:

  • In constant communication (i.e. they’ll never ghost you)
  • respectful to you, your family, and your home
  • professional (i.e. be in their Very Best behavior at all times)
  • punctuation and show up on the agreed upon times

Hey, that sounds just like us!

8. What Your Contractor Should Expect From You

To help your renovation run smoothly, there are a couple of things which you could do to encourage your contractor too.

As a great client you should be:

  • In constant communication (we’d really like to have the ability to read minds but that’s not our superpower!)
  • Individual, particularly now that some things may take longer
  • critical, which will keep things going across
  • welcoming (i.e. create the team feels that you are happy to see these). A group that feels valued will frequently go the excess mile. Plus, you’ll be happier too!
