Phantom of the Opera | 1925 Silent film starring Lon Cheney
CONCERT IS CO-SPONSORED BY KEN REMPEL & CANDIAN TIRE FINANCIAL SERVICES
To wrap up our season, on May 3, 2017 experience the riveting and dramatic 1925 silent horror film PHANTOM OF THE OPERA performed with a live, original choral soundtrack which has been crafted by Artistic Director Robert Cooper for this macabre cinematic classic. Lon Chaney stars as the mad, disfigured composer whose passionate obsession for Christine leads to murderous love. Organist extraordinaire Lynne Honsberger ramps up the action with inspired improvisations just as these great silent film classics were projected originally. Set in Paris' grandiloquent opera house, Phantom takes you from the Romantic world of French grand opera and thrusts you into the darker world of the catacombs, tunnels and sewers that lie beneath. With these visual riches in mind, the world of French opera and some of its greatest compositional proponents Gluck, Gounod, Bizet, Saint-Saens, Poulenc became some of my sources for complementary background music that shifts quickly from comedy to intimate tenderness, and from sorrowful empathy to high dramatic action.
